Developing School Counselor Competencies: Practices and Challenges in Sleman Junior High Schools
Keywords:
Competency Development, School Counselor, Counseling ChallengesAbstract
This study aims to examine the development of school counselor competencies, particularly through training and the challenges encountered in its implementation. A case study approach was employed, with data collected through in-depth interviews with counselors at a junior high school in Sleman, Yogyakarta. The findings indicate that continuous training, clinical supervision, and mentoring contribute to the development of counselors’ professional competencies. However, implementation remains challenged by heavy workloads, limited administrative support, and inadequate resources. The use of technology in continuing professional education may provide an alternative for expanding access to training and professional learning resources, with implementation adapted to counselors’ needs.
