ABSTRACT
The Recitation of the Holy Qur'an in the Tradition of Unggah no Bungkulan (A Living Qur'an Study in Sidojadi Village, Bukit Malintang District, Mandailing Natal Regency) explores a local cultural practice that integrates Islamic values. Unggah no Bungkulan is an ancestral tradition still preserved by the people of Sidojadi Village, especially when building a new house. This tradition not only reflects gratitude to Allah SWT but also strengthens social bonds and spiritual values. This research is field-based and employs a qualitative method with a Living Qur'an approach to explore how the community understands, practices, and interprets the Qur’an in their daily lives. Data were collected through interviews, observation, and documentation. The aim of this study is to determine the application of the living Quran in the Upungno Bungkulan activity and the impact created by this activity on community culture. The findings indicate that the recitation of the Holy Qur’an is the core of this tradition. Its implementation involves family members, traditional leaders, Islamic scholars, and local residents. The event begins with deliberation (musyawarah), followed by Qur’anic recitation (pengajian), communal meals, and advice from traditional elders. The Qur’anic recitation serves as a spiritual medium, a source of blessing, and a tangible expression of applying Qur’anic values in local culture. This tradition exemplifies the concept of Living Qur’an, in which the Qur’an is not only read as text but also serves as a guide in the community’s social and cultural practices. Thus, this tradition highlights the close relationship between culture and Islamic teachings as lived in everyday life.
